Building a Telescope, in Low Cost

AASTRO Monthly session on home-made telescopes held at Thiruvananthapuram on 2nd June could attract a good gathering of astronomy enthusiasts. Mr. A. P. Prabhakaran lead the session with the aid of a 4" telescope which he had made with his own hands. He could convince the audience that we can build our own telescope at home spending only half the amount required for a commercially made one.

Quoting his own words:
The choice as to buying a commercially made telescope or taking the challenge of making one your own is a personal choice. It may be better for a beginner astronomer to build a suitable telescope. Making a telescope of your own is easy and very educational with the end product being a great learning tool where an amateur will learn astronomy and associated science. So build your own telescope from chosen parts according to your budget and what you wish to make yourself. Choices between using different types of optics are yours.
Dobsonian telescopes are probably the easiest to make.   The parts required to build your own telescope include Mirrors, Tube, Lenses & Mounting system. The telescope which I have demonstrated includes the following parts –
Primary mirror                        - 100 mm dia, 100 cm focal length
Secondary mirror                      - 25mm dia
Size of tube                             - 140mm dia, 120 cm long.
Miscellaneous                         - Primary mirror cell, secondary holder, focuser etc.
All the parts are available from M/s Tejraj & Co, Mumbai. With the aid of this telescope I was able to view planets including Jupiter & its 4 moons, Saturn and Orion nebulae. The approximate cost is Rs. 7,000. A commercially made dobsonian will definitely cost double.

നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ ഏറ്റവും ദൈര്‍ഘ്യമേറിയ ചന്ദ്രഗ്രഹണം ഈ മാസം 15ന്. ഈ ദിവസം സൂര്യനും ഭൂമിയും ചന്ദ്രനും ഒരു നേര്‍രേഖയിലെത്തുന്നതോടെ ഭൂമിയുടെ നിഴല്‍ ചന്ദ്രനെ പരിപൂര്‍ണമായും മറയ്ക്കും. ഇന്ത്യയിലുടനീളം ഇതു കാണാനാവു.

ഭൂമിയുടെ ഇരുണ്ട ഭാഗത്തേക്കു ചന്ദ്രന്‍ നീങ്ങുന്നതോടെ അതൊരു ചെമ്പന്‍ ചുവപ്പുനിറത്തിലേക്കു മാറും. രാത്രി 11.53ഓടെയാണ് ഇതാരംഭിക്കുക. അടുത്ത ദിവസം പുലര്‍ച്ചെ 3.30ഓടെ ഗ്രഹണം അവസാനിക്കും. ഇന്ത്യയെ കൂടാതെ പശ്ചിമേഷ്യ, തെക്കന്‍ യൂറോപ്പ്, വടക്കന്‍ ആഫ്രിക്കന്‍ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും ഈ അസുലഭ കാഴ്ച ലഭ്യമാവും.

നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ ഏറ്റവും കറുത്ത ചന്ദ്രഗ്രഹണമായിരിക്കും ഇത്. ഇതിനു മുമ്പ് 1971 ആഗസ്ത് 6നാണ് ഒരു ചന്ദ്രഗ്രഹണം ഇന്ത്യയിലുണ്ടായത്. ഈ വര്‍ഷത്തെ അവസാന ചന്ദ്രഗ്രഹണം ഡിസംബര്‍ 10നാണ്. യുറേഷ്യ, ആസ്‌ത്രേലിയ, വടക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറന്‍ അമേരിക്ക എന്നിവിടങ്ങളില്‍ ഇതു ദൃശ്യമാവും.

Human Spaceflight became a reality 50 years ago with the launch of a bell-shaped capsule called “Vostok 1” on April 12th, 1961. The capsule was carrying Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who took his place in history as the first human to leave the bounds of Earth and enter outer space.
Exactly 20 years later, the United States embarked on a new era in spaceflight with the inaugural launch of a new type of spaceship — the Space Shuttle (April 12th, 1981). Designed to carry a larger crew and large volumes of cargo to orbit, the Space Shuttles became synonymous with human spaceflight for an entirely new generation of young people.
When the next 20-year point arrived, that generation (often called “Gen X”) laid a new space milestone by connecting thousands of people around the world to celebrate and honor the past, while building a stairway to the future. That event was Yuri’s Night, and it continues to bring the excitement, passion and promise of space travel closer to people of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds.

On 12 April 1961, Yuri Gagarin blasted off the launch pad in Baikonur at 9:08 AM local time. His call-sign for the flight was “Cedar.” Sergei Korolev, the Program’s Chief Designer, would call from the ground, “‘Dawn’ calling ‘Cedar.’” Gagarin made his historic 108 minute flight (orbiting around the whole Earth once) and parachute landed near his Vostok 1 capsule in the plains of Russia. This flight made him the first human to orbit the Earth and an international hero. Yuri was only 27 years old.
Seven years after his flight, on Wednesday 27 March 1968, Yuri was piloting a MiG-15 when he got into a tragic crash that ended his life. He was 34. People say that that is why John Glenn was not allowed to fly again for so long – to protect him. Yuri is survived by his wife Valentina and his two daughters, Lenochka and Galochka.
The Cosmonaut program is rich with traditions that honor Yuri’s first flight. It is customary to visit the Gagarin Memorial before your mission, to sign the log book in Yuri’s unchanged office, and to urinate on the tire of the bus that brings you to the launch pad (mostly because Yuri had to himself right before his flight). We hope the world will celebrate 12 April together and create new traditions of space and unity.

After being just an idea for four years, Yuri’s Night, the World Party for Space, sprang into existence at the United Nations’ Space Generation Advisory Council Graz Conference in September of 2000. Trish Garner, George Whitesides, and Loretta Hidalgo announced the kickoff of the event and released the first version of our website.
Seven months later, they had a buzzing team of space activists and party planners in Los Angeles and 64 events around the world. Our global space community was ready to spring into action to make a difference.
Felipe Hernandez (or Astrolipe), a DJ/space architect from Chile, was interviewed by CNN en Español, Loretta was on the KNBC local news live in the studio, Chris Welch was on BBC Radio, and George was on both NPR Morning Edition and MTV’s Mandy Moore Summer Special – where he was highlighted as a good guy for his efforts to bring the planet together to dance for space.
The parties were all extraordinary. In Mission Control we had a countdown to the first party in Sydney, and then they just continued to roll around the planet. Melbourne had a posh affair with space cocktails; the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station did a toast; Cape Town celebrated with a space wedding complete with a Shuttle cake; Vancouver, London, Leiden, Istanbul, Bröllin, and Dublin all had large dance parties; Boston put on a full day of events; and in Houston even the NASA brass showed up to get down.
Here in LA things went beautifully. We had the Lunar Rover parked out front, the live webcast of our event and our interviews with VIPs being broadcast around the world, the most kicking DJs who rocked the house, an awesome crowd that just loved the music and the vibe, amazing video work of our historical, current and fictional space footage projected on the main screen, an excellent laser system, and the best silver bikini clad go-go dancers in the Milky Way.
After the party young people from the LA club scene told us it was the best party they had been to and thanked us for creating such an awesome space. Young engineers from JPL stopped and told us it was the most fun they had had out in a long time. We succeeded in doing what we had set out to do – bring together the people who really work for space with the people who think space is cool and want to be a part of it.

Yuri Gagarin: First Man in Space

April 12 was already a huge day in space history twenty years before the launch of the first shuttle mission. On that day in 1961, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (left, on the way to the launch pad) became the first human in space, making a 108-minute orbital flight in his Vostok 1 spacecraft. Newspapers like The Huntsville Times (right) trumpeted Gagarin's accomplishment.

Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space less than a month later.

Scientific cooperation with the Soviet Union dates back to the very beginnings of space flight. The first cooperative human space flight project between the United States and the Soviet Union took place in 1975. The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project was designed to test the compatibility of rendezvous and docking systems for American and Soviet spacecraft and to open the way for future joint manned flights.

Since 1993, the U.S. and Russia have worked together on a number of other space flight projects. The Space Shuttle began visiting the Russian Mir space station in 1994, and in 1995 Norm Thagard became the first U.S. astronaut to take up residency on Mir. Seven U.S. astronauts served with their Russian counterparts aboard the orbiting Mir laboratory from 1995 to 1998. The experience gained from the Mir cooperative effort, as well as lessons learned, paved the way for the International Space Station.

In-orbit construction on the Station began in November 1998, and it has been staffed non-stop with international crews since November 2000. The first Station crew, made up of U.S. commander Bill Shepherd and cosmonauts Yuri Gidzenko and Sergei Krikalev, was launched on board a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. The crew returned to Earth on the Space Shuttle Discovery in March 2001.

There were widely spread rumors and fear among the people over chances of natural disasters and occurrence of unusual phenomenon because of 'Super Moon effect' these days.Speculations have moved the goalposts to within 1 or 2 weeks of a supermoon to suggest a causal relationship with specific natural disasters such as the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Such a widening of the effect window is unjustified since the Moon was further from the Earth than average, making a super moon effect impossible.

A supermoon is bigger and brighter than an ordinary full moon. The reason: the moon’s orbit around the Earth is elliptical, not round. And so when the elliptical path passes closest to Earth a full moon becomes 14 per cent wider and 30 per cent brighter than an average full moon. Not since 1992 has the moon passed as close to Earth as happened on Saturday night.

AASTRO Kerala took effective efforts and organised activities at various levels to debunk this controversy.AASTRO Kozhikkode chapter organised classes and demonstration sessions thorough out the district.hundereds of people gathered to take in their fill of the ‘supermoon' that rose on Saturday night sky.Observations were arranged in places like Eranjikkal, Mananchira, Thondayadu, Mukkam, Balussery, Nadakkavu, Perambra,Madappally,Kuttikkaattoor,Kundamangalam and so on.Programmes were organised in different educational institutions too.

Some studies have reported a weak correlation between lunar activity and shallow, very low intensity earthquakes. However, no evidence has been found of any correlation with major earthquakes.The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami is the only earthquake of 8.0 magnitude or greater to have occurred within 2 weeks of the 14 extreme supermoons from 1900 to the present date,suggesting that the claim of a supermoon effect on the incidence of large-scale earthquakes is unjustified.

കഴിഞ്ഞ കുറെ ദിവസങ്ങളായി ഞാന്‍ കേള്‍ക്കുന്ന കഥകളുടെ ചുരുക്കമാണ് മേല്‍ എഴുതിയത്. ആളുകള്‍ക്ക് പറഞ്ഞു ബഹളം വെക്കാന്‍ മറ്റൊരു വിഷയം. പക്ഷെ പല അടിസ്ഥാന ശാസ്ത്ര സത്യങ്ങളെയും കുറിച്ച് പോതുജനത്തിനുള്ള അറിവില്ലായ്മയുടെ തെളിവ് കൂടിയാണ് ഇത്തരം കഥകളുടെ പ്രചരണം.

ഇനി ഈ കഥയുടെ പിന്നിലെ സത്യം അറിയാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കാം...

ചന്ദ്രന്‍ ഭൂമിയുടെ ഒരു ഉപഗ്രഹം എന്ന നിലയില്‍ ഭൂമിയെ വലം വെക്കാന്‍ വിധിക്കപ്പെട്ട ആളാണല്ലോ. ചന്ദ്രന്റെ പരിക്രമണ പഥം അഥവാ ഓര്‍ബിറ്റ് ദീര്‍ഘ വൃത്തമാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ ഭൂമിയില്‍ നിന്നും ചന്ദ്രനിലേക്കുള്ള ദൂരം മാറിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കും.

ചന്ദ്രന്‍ ഭൂമിയോട് ഏറ്റവും അടുത്ത് വരുന്ന സ്ഥാനം perigee എന്നും ഏറ്റവും അകലെ പോകുന്ന സ്ഥാനം apogee എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു(ചിത്രം)

ചന്ദ്രന്‍ ഭൂമിയെ ഒരുതവണ വലം വെക്കാന്‍ 27.32 ദിവസം എടുക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അതായത് 27.32 ദിവസത്തില്‍ ഒരിക്കല്‍ വീതം ചന്ദ്രന്‍ പെരിഗീയിലൂടെ കടന്നു പോകുന്നുണ്ട്. perigee യില്‍ എത്തുമ്പോള്‍ ചന്ദ്രന്‍ ഭൂമിയില്‍ ചെലുത്തുന്ന ആകര്‍ഷണബലം apogee നിന്നും ചെലുതുന്നതിനേക്കാള്‍ ഏകദേശം 20 ശതമാനം കൂടുതലായിരിക്കും എന്നത് സത്യമാണ്. പക്ഷെ വേലിയേറ്റങ്ങളുടെ ശക്തി കൂടുന്നതുപോലുള്ള ചില ചെറിയ മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് അപ്പുറം ഒന്നും ചെയ്യാന്‍ ഇത് പര്യാപ്തമല്ല.

വരുന്ന മാര്‍ച്ച്‌ 19 നു സംഭവിക്കുന്നത് സൂപ്പര്‍ മൂണ്‍ എന്ന പ്രതിഭാസമാണ്. പതിവിലും വലിപ്പം കൂടിയതായി ചന്ദ്രബിംബം കാണപ്പെടുന്ന അവസ്ഥ ആയതുകൊണ്ടാണ്‌ ആ പേര്‍ അതിനു കൈവന്നത്. ചന്ദ്രന്‍ പെരിഗീയില്‍ വരുന്ന എല്ലാ അവസരങ്ങളിലും ഇത് സംഭവിക്കാറില്ല. അതിനു ചന്ദ്രന്റെ പെരിഗീയില്‍ എത്തലും പൂര്‍ണ ചന്ദ്രനും ഒരുമിച്ച് സംഭവിക്കണം. ചന്ദ്രന്റെ വൃദ്ധി -ക്ഷയങ്ങള്‍ (ചന്ദ്രക്കലമുതല്‍ പൂര്‍ണചന്ദ്രന്‍ വരെയുള്ള ചന്ദ്രന്റെ രൂപമാറ്റങ്ങള്‍) യഥാര്‍ഥത്തില്‍ സൂര്യനാല്‍ പ്രകാശിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ചന്ദ്രന്റെ ഭാഗം, ഭൂമിയെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച് അതിന്റെ സ്ഥാനം മാറുന്നതിനാല്‍ പല അളവുകളില്‍ നമുക്ക് ദ്രിശ്യമാകുന്നതാണ്.

ചിത്രം കാണുക. അതില്‍ ചന്ദ്രന്റെ സ്ഥാനവും അതാതു സ്ഥാനങ്ങളില്‍ ചന്ദ്രന്‍ ഭൂമിയില്‍ എങ്ങനെ കാണപ്പെടും എന്നുമാണ് കാണിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ചന്ദ്രന്‍ കൃത്യമായി സൂര്യനും ഭൂമിക്കും ഇടയില്‍ വരുന്ന സമയം ചന്ദ്രന്റെ പ്രകാശിതമായ ഭാഗം നമുക്ക് കാണാന്‍ കഴിയില്ല. അതാണ്‌ അമാവാസി. അതുപോലെ ഭൂമി കൃത്യം സൂര്യനും ചന്ദ്രനും ഇടയില്‍ വരുമ്പോള്‍ പൌര്‍ണമി സംഭവിക്കും എന്ന് കാണാന്‍ പ്രയാസമില്ലല്ലോ.
ചുരുക്കി പറഞ്ഞാല്‍, സൂര്യന്റെ സ്ഥാനം കൂടി അനുയോജ്യമായിരുന്നാല്‍ മാത്രമേ 'സൂപ്പര്‍ മൂണ്‍' സംഭവിക്കൂ. ചന്ദ്രന്‍ പെരിഗീയില്‍ ആയിരിക്കുകയും, ഭൂമിയും സൂര്യനുമായി നേര്‍രേഖയില്‍ ആയിരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ സൂര്യന്റെ ആകര്‍ഷണം കാരണം ചന്ദ്രന്റെ ഓര്‍ബിറ്റ് നു അല്പം 'വലിവ്' സംഭവിക്കുകയും തുടര്‍ന്ന് ചന്ദ്രന്‍ ഒരല്പം കൂടി ഭൂമിയോട് അടുത്തു വരുകയും ചെയ്യും. അതാണ്‌ ഈ മാര്‍ച്ച്‌ 19 നു സംഭവിക്കാന്‍ പോകുന്നത്. അന്ന് നമ്മുടെ അമ്പിളിമാമന്‍ കാണാന്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ സുന്ദരനായിരിക്കും...

ഭൂമിയില്‍ ഇതിനു മുന്‍പ് ഉണ്ടായതിലും അപ്പുറം വലിയ ദുരന്തങ്ങളൊന്നും സൃഷ്ട്ടിക്കാന്‍ ഈ പ്രതിഭാസത്തിനു കഴിവില്ല. പിന്നെ ഇത്തരം ലോകാവസാന കഥകള്‍ പ്രച്ചരിപ്പിക്കുന്നതുകൊന്ദ് കുറെ പേരെങ്കിലും ഇതിനെ പറ്റി കൂടുതല്‍ പഠിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കും... പിന്നെ എന്നെ പോലുള്ളവര്‍ക്ക് ഇങ്ങനെ ചില പ്രചാരവേലകള്‍ കൂടി നടത്തുകയും ആവാമല്ലോ...

പെരിന്തല്‍മണ്ണ: വാനനിരീക്ഷണത്തിനും ശാസ്ത്രപഠനത്തിനും ആധുനികരീതിയിലുള്ള സൗകര്യങ്ങള്‍ ഒരുക്കി പെരിന്തല്‍മണ്ണയില്‍ സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്ന ഗലീലിയോ സയന്‍സ് സെന്ററിന്റെ രൂപരേഖ പ്രകാശനം ചെയ്തു. ദേശീയ ശാസ്ത്രദിനാചരണത്തിന്റെ സംസ്ഥാനതല ഉദ്ഘാടനത്തോടനുബന്ധിച്ച് പെരിന്തല്‍മണ്ണയില്‍ നടന്ന ചടങ്ങില്‍ സംസ്ഥാന ശാസ്ത്രസാങ്കേതിക പരിസ്ഥിതി കൗണ്‍സില്‍ എക്‌സി. വൈസ് പ്രസിഡന്റ് ഡോ. സി.ടി.എസ്. നായര്‍ പ്രകാശനം നിര്‍വ്വഹിച്ചു.

നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങള്‍ക്കുള്ള സൗകര്യങ്ങള്‍, ഡോര്‍മെറ്ററി, ഐ.ടി അധിഷ്ഠിത ലൈബ്രറി സംവിധാനം, ശാസ്ത്ര സെമിനാറുകള്‍, ചര്‍ച്ചകള്‍, പ്രദര്‍ശനങ്ങള്‍ എന്നിവ നടത്താന്‍ ആധുനിക സജ്ജീകരണമുള്ള ഓഡിറ്റോറിയങ്ങള്‍ എന്നിവയും സെന്ററിലുണ്ടാവും.

കൂടാതെ നൂതന ശാസ്ത്ര സാങ്കേതിക വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ രീതികള്‍ പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തുക, വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികളിലും അധ്യാപകരിലും പൊതുജനങ്ങളിലും ശാസ്ത്രാവബോധം വളര്‍ത്തുക എന്നതും കേന്ദ്രത്തിന്റെ ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങളാണ്. പെരിന്തല്‍മണ്ണ നഗരസഭ വിട്ടുനല്‍കിയ 1.43 ഏക്കര്‍ സ്ഥലത്താണ് സെന്റര്‍ സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്നത്. പെരിന്തല്‍മണ്ണ- മണ്ണാര്‍ക്കാട് റോഡില്‍ കുളിര്‍മലയിലാണിത്. 5.41 കോടി രൂപയോളമാണ് നിര്‍മ്മാണച്ചെലവ് പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കുന്നത്. നിര്‍മ്മാണം പൂര്‍ത്തിയാകുന്നതുവരെ മനഴി സ്റ്റാന്‍ഡില്‍ നഗരസഭ വിട്ടുനല്‍കിയിട്ടുള്ള 2000 ചതുരശ്ര അടിസ്ഥലത്ത് പെഡഗോഗി പാര്‍ക്ക് ഉള്‍പ്പെടെയുള്ളവ താത്കാലികമായി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കും.

ശാസ്ത്രസാങ്കേതിക പരിസ്ഥിതി കൗണ്‍സില്‍, സര്‍വശിക്ഷ അഭിയാന്‍, പെരിന്തല്‍മണ്ണ നഗരസഭ, വി.ശശികുമാര്‍ എം.എല്‍.എ, മുന്‍ എം.പി എ.വിജയരാഘവന്‍ എന്നിവരുടെ വികസനഫണ്ട്, വി.എസ്.എസ്.സി, ഐ.എസ്.ആര്‍.ഒ തുടങ്ങിയ ഏജന്‍സികളുടെയും സഹായം എന്നിവയോടെയാണ് സെന്റര്‍ തുടങ്ങുന്നത്.

നിലവില്‍ സംസ്ഥാനത്ത് നാല് സെന്ററുകളാണുള്ളത്. മലപ്പുറം, പാലക്കാട്, കോഴിക്കോട്, വയനാട് ജില്ലകളിലെ വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍ക്കും അധ്യാപകര്‍ക്കും പൊതുജനത്തിനും താത്കാലികമായി താമസിച്ച് പഠിച്ച് പോകാവുന്ന തരത്തിലാവും സെന്റര്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുക.

ചടങ്ങില്‍ വി.ശശികുമാര്‍ എം.എല്‍.എ അധ്യക്ഷത വഹിച്ചു. മഞ്ചേരി ജി.ബി.എച്ച്.എസ്.എസ് വിദ്യാര്‍ഥി ഗോകുല്‍ രൂപകല്പന ചെയ്ത എംബ്ലം മുന്‍ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ മന്ത്രി എന്‍.സൂപ്പി പ്രകാശനം ചെയ്തു. സ്ഥലം വിട്ടുനല്‍കിയ വി.ഭരതനെ നഗരസഭ ചെയര്‍പേഴ്‌സണ്‍ കെ.സുധാകുമാരി ആദരിച്ചു. നഗരസഭാ സെക്രട്ടറി ഇന്‍ ചാര്‍ജ് കെ.ഗിരിജ രൂപരേഖ ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങി. നഗരസഭാ വൈസ് ചെയര്‍മാന്‍ കെ.പി.രവീന്ദ്രന്‍ എസ്.എസ്.എ വിഹിതം ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങി.

ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞന്മാരായ വി.പി.ബാലഗംഗാധരന്‍, ഡോ.സി.പി.അരവിന്ദാക്ഷന്‍, പ്രൊഫ.കെ.പാപ്പുട്ടി എന്നിവര്‍ വിവിധ ശാസ്ത്ര വിഷയങ്ങളില്‍ ക്ലാസ്സുകളെടുത്തു. തുടര്‍ന്ന് ശാസ്ത്ര സംവാദവും ശാസ്ത്ര പ്രദര്‍ശനവും നടന്നു. കെ.സുധാകുമാരി, വി.അജിത് പ്രഭു, കാട്ടുങ്ങല്‍ നസീറ, എം.കെ.ശ്രീധരന്‍, വി.ഇന്ദിര തുടങ്ങിയവര്‍ പ്രസംഗിച്ചു.

Insulated copper thread 1 meter
Powerful magnet (Wich can go through the cylinder)
L.E.D. Bulb
You do:
Round the copper thread around the Cylinder in it's middle and fix the L.E.D. in it's two terminals like this:

Put the magnet into the cylinder and hold two mouths of it with your fingers and shake well.

Now the bulb lights.
